A glimpse into my process:
I make my pottery from a variety of porcelain and stoneware clays. Each piece is thrown by hand on the wheel, faceted, carved, and textured using found objects such as shells and stones. My pieces are usually unglazed or coated in a thin layer of flashing slip before I fire them in a wood-burning kiln. The interaction of flame and wood ash with the clay and slips creates dynamic surfaces full of gradients of colorful flashing and distinct patterns of wood ash. While woodfiring is my preferred firing method, I occasionally fire pieces in soda kilns and gas/electric kilns.
All of my wares are designed to be functional, which informs the materials I use and the firing processes I explore.
